Mexican Campaign for Better
Learning
Recently,
the Executive Director of the Applied Scholastics education program, Campana
Mexicana para Mejorar el Estudio, or Mexican Campaign for Better Living,
went to Mexico City and met with personnel from the adult education branch
of the National Institute for the Education of Adults (INEA). The government
asked Campana Mexicana to start a pilot program in one of the jails in
Mexico City.
The Campana
Mexicana delivered the Basic Study Manual course for 40 staff
who help with the education of inmates.
Recently,
Campana Mexicana put on a graduation ceremony with inmates and authorities
of Reclusorio jail. Twenty-seven were graduated at the ceremony.
They graduated
27 of the group and then continued working with the rest until they finished.
The head
of the school of the prison was equally impressed. He gave the example
of one student who had stayed up until 4:00 AM to catch up on his studies.
He also indicated that the inmates had never responded to his directions
the way they had for Campana Mexicana, saying, "Your course has something
special. We have never had so many people studying in the prison school."
At
the graduation, several of the inmates/students spoke about their successes
with the course and how their studies had changed their lives. Several
completions were announced at this time, and they gave their success.
One said,
"My family have already seen the changes that have been generated
in me. I'm happier. I'm more productive. I never looked up the word 'reclusorio'
(place of confinement) before and never confronted the seriousness of
my acts." Another one said, "If I'd had this technology before,
I may have not been here and would never have committed the acts I did."
